I wanted to let you all know about a great project I’ve started working on. My friends Pace, Serafina, and Kyeli Smith are amazing women who present a series of workshops on communication called The Usual Error. Their presentations have really improved my communication skills. …so when they approached me about illustrating the book they’re writing based on their workshops, I jumped at the chance. I’ll keep you updated on the status of the project as it changes. Right now, I’m working up sketches for each chapter.
Today’s sketch is a ridiculous joke that only makes sense if you’re familiar with both the Usual Error and Dungeons and Dragons. …so bear with me, and I’ll explain it to you; which we all know is a great way to make a joke funnier.
If you’re familiar with D&D, but not the Usual Error, proceed to Step 1.
If you’re familiar with the Usual Error, but not D&D, proceed to Step 2.
If you’re familiar with both the Usual Error and D&D, you should already get the joke!
Step 1: You already know that Skeletons have DR 5/Bludgeoning, and Zombies have DR 5/Slashing. The Usual Error boils down to thinking that everyone else is just like you. …so, the Skeleton and Zombie are making the Usual Error by attacking someone else with the weapon that would be most effective against themselves, but will be useless against each other.
Step 2: You already know that the Usual Error is assuming that others are just like you. …in D&D, Skeletons are protected from all types of damage except for Bludgeoning (blunt force). Zombies are protected from all but Slashing (cutting) damage. …so, they are attacking each other with the weapon that would be most effective against themselves, but they’ll be useless against each other. They’re making the Usual Error!
Funny, right? Ha! Feel free to hate me for my genius.
